Juini Booth out in a soulful performance at Modified. He played solo bass accompanied by some occasional, loose percussion and electronics. He kept the attention of the full house. His playing is freee but very melodic too. Its great to have a New York scene musician play in Phoenix and for him to fill the venue.

Juini Booth solo set (Sun Ra Arkestra bassist) at Modified
Juini Booth bassist for the Sun Ra Arkestra plays a special concert this Thursday, February 16th at Modified Arts 8pm. Juini will play a solo set. The Thursday evening concert also features The Project.
Juini Booth has expanded the range of the contrabass into a refined personal language of intense acoustic awareness and spatiality of sound. Firmly rooted in the forefront of the American jazz tradition, Booth’s music also integrates influences from world music emerging beyond the boundaries of categories to express the poetics of universal humanness. His compositions reflect a masterful use of simple melodic themes developed through unexpected harmonies, unusual tonal qualities and time relationships, inviting the listener to a new level of musical perception. Booth has performed and toured for over 30 years with jazz musicians from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to Tony Williams Lifetime to Coleman Hawkins to Albert Ayler to Chuck Mangione to Sun Ra to McCoy Tyner. Booth is currently focusing on composing new works for contrabass, and collaborative projects with artists of other disciplines, as well as teaching and recording. Recording credits include: Shelley Mann, McCoy Tyner (3 albums), Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, Hamiet Bluiett, and many others.

Now, Where Did I Put My Camera?

Was clearing up my gear after a gig today while speaking to Jessie Nelson the drummer & vibes player. Her head was peaking round a tree as we spoke as I said “Hey, that would make a cool photo.” Then I exclaimed “Help ma boab, I’ve got my camera in ma bag.”
Here is said photograph of the lovely Jessie. The first in a series of musicians at work and at play!! Coming to a gallery near you. ( Well, after I take a few more photos of course….)
Moog – The Movie
In the early 70′s my favorite instrument was the Moog synthesizer. Many of my favorite bands used this type of sound including Tangerine Dream, Neu, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire etc. etc.
The other day I watched the documentary / movie that came out in 2004. (Thanks Sharon!) Robert Moog came across as a real visionary and he was obviously held in high regard by the musicians that play his instrument. The film, will I’m sure, provide future generations with an insight into his mind and how this led to the development of his instruments. Imagine if we had such an insight into the minds of Stradivarius, Steinway or Fender. The only drawback for me was the lack of live shots of some of the early users of the instruments. That for me would have been made this documentary complete.
