Jimmy Peggie - Musician and Composer
Jimmy Peggie hails from Perth in Scotland and now resides in Arizona. From an early age he was obsessed with music. He comes from a musical family. His grandfather was a fiddle player. His father played sax with a big band group and doubled on fiddle to play traditional music. His uncle played double bass.
During school he suffered the enforced Scottish Country Dancing that was required as part of the curriculum which left him with high regards for Waltzes and Reels.
His first instrument was a guitar which he received around the age of 9. During that time he managed to throttle some chords out of it. He also liked to detune it and record effects. He was also digging the sounds made by common household appliances!! He spent time recording these implements. "There was a sound I was trying to capture. I didn't know what it was at the time but I knew I had to search for it." He finally found it with the low frequency of the vacuum cleaner!
From this experimentation he moved on to listening to music. He was a lover of electronic music during the early 1970s. German groups like Can and Tangerine Dream as well as electronic musicians such as Brian Eno were on his turntable at the time. He came of age during the punk rock explosion that rocked the UK during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was in the late 70s that Jimmy acquired his first bass (drawn by his love of low frequencies) and played with his first groups.
He moved to the US during the late 1980's and eventually met up with Greg Sneed and Darrell Stackhouse and formed the semi-legendary alternative band the 'Diesel Rock Bombes.' They wrote tunes, and played gigs around Arizona for quite a few years. They also made it to the recording studio, recorded some tunes and then disbanded. 'The DRB were great. Original tunes, very little orthodox songwriting."
Then he got interested in playing jazz. He had been interested in jazz from an early age influence primarily by gypsy jazz musicians such as Stephan Grappelli and Django Reinhart. .
As well as jazz Jimmy has lately been involved with Celtic Music, Electronic, Folk, Brazilian, Pop, Rock Ambient, Free-form, and all points between.
His bass inspirations come from Steve Swallow, Ronan Guilfoyle, and Charlie Haden. He plays a 50 year old East German double bass and a Martin acoustic bass guitar.
Today Jimmy plays, records and teaches in a variety of situations. His compositions are featured on the three Subterranean Jazz CDs. He continues to explore avenues to compose and play unique music.
"I have always been drawn to music that is off the beaten track. Nothing gives me more enjoyment than to lie down and listen to electronic sounds, avant-guard jazz, music from other cultures and music that should not belong to any culture. That is what motivates me and drives me to work on music every day of my life. And when I am not playing, the tape recorder in my head switches on and is on sifting through sounds determining what may work with what. Without sounding too pretentious my passion/curse is a burning desire to do things that have never been done before."
