What is Social Media?

Social media is all about communications.  Social media sites such as Facebook, twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Wikipedia, Digg etc are sites where you can interact with others.  There is an exchange of information in many different directions. This exchange can include information such as comments, reposts, recommendations, votes, reviews etc.

In the past information was pushed out by media sources such as TV and newspapers.  It generally went in only one direction.  Social media has changed all that and now the information is responded to and developed by interactions.

Social media sites can include social news, social networking, social bookmarking, social video and photo sharing, wikis, blogs, forums, review sites etc., or in fact any type of site that you can interact with.

Social media marketing makes use of  social sites to build brands and communicate with customers.
